Xu Wennuan laid in bed and spaced out for a long time. Eventually, when she could no longer resist, she climbed out of bed and went into the bathroom. After she came out, Xu Wennuan walked out from the bedroom instead of heading back to bed. The living room was empty, and Lu Bancheng was nowhere to be found.

Xu Wennuan gaped slightly. She didn’t know why she was feeling so anxious. She dashed into the kitchen, the guest bedroom, and the bathroom to search for him. That was when she saw the note on the table. She held it up and read it. “Remember to eat something before you go to work.” That was when she was certain that he had in fact left.

Xu Wennuan didn’t know why she felt depressed or why her heart felt as empty as her apartment. After a long time, she placed the note down and looked at the food on the dining table: a bowl of lean-meat porridge, two vegetable dishes, and a bowl of black chicken soup.

For a period of time when they had been married, he had cooked for her every day. Even though she had never eaten his food, she had often looked at it, so she knew that he had prepared everything himself.
