Chapter 165: Deceiving Uncle Sheng (64)
The next day, Shu Nuan and Wen Zhigu took the carriage hired by the academy and set off.
From Beiguo’s capital to Yu Shuicheng, it would take tens of days by carriage.
The two passed this time in harmony, and on the way, they saw numerous sights. The closer they got to their destination, the colder it got, as it was the climate. Still, they had heard that Xinjiang’s north was as cold as its south. When they talked about this on the road, the coachman said, “It should already be snowing over there in Yu Shuicheng.”
“Zhigu, have you brought warm clothes?”
Wen Zhigu wanted to shake her head to disagree, but first she opened her baggage on a whim and found several brand-new cotton-padded jackets and cloaks inside. She recalled that Ji Xubai had slept with her the night before she’d left, and these clothes had probably been put in by him.
However, Wen Zhigu would not flatter herself by thinking that Ji Xubai cared about her. After all, he was only worried for his child.
Wen Zhigu told Shu Nuan that she’d brought warm clothes and asked her if she had as well.
Shu Nuan nodded, then pulled open the window and looked out at the trees passing by. She muttered to herself, “It must be freezing in Southern Xinjiang…”
“Are you worried that he has no warm clothing?”
Shu Nuan recalled something and said, “He didn’t bring any when he left.”
Wen Zhigu couldn’t help but also gaze out of the window, and smiled.
”Shu Nuan, you are the first place holder among the class’s students, but your head’s stopped working thinking of him. His subordinates would’ve obviously prepared the clothes for him.”
Shu Nuan blinked, thinking that she was so stupid. However, she also recalled how Ji Xili had gone along with Sheng Qianmo.
Ji Xili had grown up with Sheng Qianmo as a childhood friend and they had a great relationship…
There even seemed to be an engagement in place…
Ji Xili had always been by his side. She would have obviously cared about all of his needs and worried about his safety.
In an instant, Shu Nuan’s shining eyes fell dim. She put down the curtain and sat back on the couch.
“Did I say something wrong?” Wen Zhigu asked upon seeing Nuan turn a little forlorn.
After a while of being exposed to the wind, Shu Nuan felt cold. Sniffing her nose and shaking her head, she said, “No, I just feel worried.”
“You’ve been worrying too much,” Wen Zhigu said in a helpless manner.
Originally, Wen Zhigu had not intended to tell Shu Nuan about her pregnancy. It wasn’t a matter to be celebrated and so she said to herself that it would only add another person who felt sorry for her.
But she hadn’t expected that her morning sickness would occur so early into the pregnancy. They had just arrived at a post near Yu Shuicheng and planned to take a rest, leaving straight for the city. But she got so sick that she was forced to get off the carriage and throw up.
Shu Nuan thought the girl was sick, and when she finished vomiting, Nuan handed her a water bag, wanting to take her to the doctor immediately. But Wen Zhigu drank the water and shook her head.
“It’s okay. I’m not sick.”
“But why did you…”
Wen Zhigu hadn’t vomited during the first part of the journey at all, meaning that she couldn’t have just gotten dizzy.
Shu Nuan linked together the clues and looked at Wen Zhigu with dazed eyes.
Then, she saw Wen Zhigu look down at her lower abdomen, before she said with a deathly voice, “I am pregnant.”
Shu Nuan was shocked.
She opened her mouth a little, but for a while, she didn’t know what to say.
Shu Nuan didn’t think Wen Zhigu would have to suffer such disgrace again and again.
