Chapter 170: Deceiving Uncle Sheng (69)

–

“I want to go to Southern Xinjiang in advance.”

Upon going back to their resting place, Shu Nuan had started packing while talking to Wen Zhigu.

Wen Zhigu was sitting in front of the tea table as she calmly watched Nuan pack her things.

“The Fourth Prince is still missing. What will you do in Southern Xinjiang? Don’t forget that the war still continues.”

“At least I have to go and see what happened there.” Shu Nuan stopped packing, gave Wen Zhigu a look, and said. “The report here in Yushuicheng will be handed over to you for the time being. I will be careful and try to make report the war in southern Xinjiang.”

Wen Zhigu sighed helplessly.

“I can’t refute what you said about Teacher Li ordering us, but it’s too dangerous for you.”

“I will be careful.”

Wen Zhigu looked at her and said, “The swords on the battlefield are ruthless.”

Shu Nuan was quiet for a moment, then she raised her head and looked at Wen Zhigu. For a long time, she did not speak, as she didn’t know what to say. She kept staring at Wen Zhigu. After a long time, she bowed her head and continued to pack.

She was only going to Southern Xinjiang to scout the current situation. So she didn’t bring much luggage, only the clothes and travelling expenses.

Before leaving, Wen Zhigu gave a dagger to her, and said, “Take it, and be careful on the road.”

Shu Nuan hadn’t expected Wen Zhigu to prepare a weapon. She took the dagger and felt moved. In the end, she gently nodded her head and hugged Wen Zhigu.

“Be careful yourself, and I’ll come back to you soon.”

“Good.”

Shu Nuan hired a carriage, but the coachman said that he could only take her to the foot of the mountain outside Yushui City. The rest of the way was up to her.

Shu Nuan knew well the danger of Southern Xinjiang, so she did not force the coachman to go inside the city.

When she arrived at the foot of the mountain, she began trekking with her luggage in tow.

Since it was snowing heavily, Shu Nuan wrapped herself up in a big cloak and walked with difficulty in her snow boots. From dawn to dusk, she climbed and passed several rivers. In the end, she was too tired to walk any further. And since it was already dark, she couldn’t go any further anyway. Shu Nuan found a grotto beside a mountain stream.

She found some dried branches nearby, mostly stained with frost. She could barely make use of them. She drilled a hole in a piece of wood with a stick to raise its temperature, and when the fire began, she stuffed more wood into the fire pit. She hurriedly put her cold hands near the fire and massaged her wrists. Because she’d drilled a wood to make the fire, both of her hands were red and swollen. They’d felt cold as ice and painful, but in the end she could enjoy the warmth licking her palms.

Shu Nuan took dry food from her luggage and ate it with the cold water in the water bag. After filling her stomach a little, she leaned against the rock wall and closed her eyes, intending to get up early the next day and then to move on.

After the tiring day, Shu Nuan soon fell asleep.

In the middle of the night, a dark figure approached the entrance of the grotto without making a sound. He stood there with his lips slightly open as he said a word in a low voice. A purple-gold five-claw worm crawled into Shu Nuan’s baggage, and then the figure immediately left.

After daybreak, the fire beside Shu Nuan had long been extinguished. The hole was filled with snow. Outside, the wind still blew strong.

Shu Nuan again put on the cloak, wrapped herself tightly to move forward the center of capital.

Arriving at the inside of Southern Xinjiang, it had already been the third day of departure.

Shu Nuan had prepared for the worst, but when she arrived in the inner city, she instead saw the people who were left behind. There was no smoke outside the city, except for some buildings that were damaged.
