Chapter 13: The Unfair Bet

Diabetes mellitus. Diabetes. The Emperor definitely had diabetes! ‘Without treatment, his blood sugar would’ve continued to increase, and as it climbed up to 1000, it ended in acidosis.’ Diabetic coma, or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), in medical terms.

It was an emergency situation in modern times as well. With emergency treatment, death could be avoided, but it would’ve been hard with the current knowledge of medicine of the Britia Empire. ‘I can’t cure diabetes, but the coma can be stopped with just a little effort. But what do I need to say?’

She hesitated. On Earth, it would’ve ended with her telling her patients to get tested for diabetes, but things were different here. ‘Diabetes is known, but not that well-known, and will they trust me if someone who isn’t a doctor says it?’ That was the biggest problem. If they would believe what she said!

The Emperor asked her a question like she was being strange.

“Why do you ask those things, lady?”

“That’s…”

“It’s ok, you can say it.”

Eventually she opened her mouth to speak. ‘Although I don’t know how they’ll take it.’ However, she couldn’t just neglect the Emperor’s illness, because if it was indeed diabetes, a little treatment could have immense effects.

“I saw a diagnosis for similar symptoms you have in a book recently.”

“Hm. You read a book about the medical field.”

The Emperor had a surprised face. Medical books were different from normal books. Without prior knowledge about the subject, it was difficult to even try to understand the material, but she had read that?

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“So, what did it say in the book?”

“I don’t recall the exact name of the disease. However, I saw that if blood sugar increases, it leads to similar symptoms of what Your Majesty has”

“Sugar? Are you talking about the sugar we eat?”

“Yes, it’s a necessary nutrient for our body, but if the amount of sugar in our body is excessive, the book said the symptoms that Your Majesty is having occurs.”

“Hm…”

The Emperor stroked his chin. He didn’t seem to believe her. First of all, information about diabetes wasn’t well-known, and even the royal doctor didn’t recognize it. There was no way such a young lady would’ve been able to diagnose such an illness right away.

“I’ll speak about it with Viscount Ben.”

But the Emperor thought she wouldn’t have come up with a nonexistent disease, so he guaranteed her that much.

“Yes. Thank you, Your Majesty.”

Elise curtsied. Viscount Ben was none other than the royal doctor. ‘Since Viscount Ben is an outstanding doctor, he’ll be able to realize it’s diabetes with this clue.’ It was still a new concept, so that was probably why Viscount Ben didn’t know too much of it. ‘If it’s diagnosed and his lifestyle habits change, we’ll be able to stop him from going into a coma.’

That was what Elise thought. However, there was one thing she missed. The attention she would receive from this.

“All aside, you surprised me quite a lot today. To think you read a medical book that normal people have trouble understanding. You’re amazing.”

“You speak too highly of me.”

“No, seeing you today satisfied me.”

The Emperor looked at her proudly.

“Do you know why I called for you today?”

“…I’m not sure.”

“It was to observe you before we choose you as the Crown Princess. In my mind, I already chose you, but a small part of me was worried. After today, however, all those worries have been shaken away. With this much, I think you’ll be a perfect Crown Princess. Isn’t that right, Marquis?”

“…!”

Elise’s face turned pale. ‘No!’ This wasn’t what she had intended. She had come here to break off the engagement, but rather, the Emperor was giving her a perfect rating for the position of Crown Princess.
