The Duchess and the Devil - Chapter 85.1
Vincent stretched his stiff neck. Despite the reduced load, my body felt absolutely terrible. However, the man did not understand that this was just anxiety accumulated in his heart. Putting down the documents he was studying, he rubbed his eyes and left the office, intending to go upstairs.
Suddenly he collided with the maid in front of the stairs. She was holding a tray.
“Are you going to Judith’s bedroom?”
– Yes, sir.
The maid blushed at the sight of his handsome face, but Vincent did not pay any attention to this, carefully taking the tray from her hands.
“I’ll take it, you can go back.”
The maid, although hesitant, still obeyed the owner’s order. And only after she had completely disappeared from sight did Vincent climb the stairs, heading to the bedroom.
The brother and sister have not communicated recently. The man found it extremely difficult to talk and be around Judith. Since childhood, she was an extremely calm child who did not easily reveal her inner emotions and experiences.
For Vincent it was like looking at himself in the mirror.
That is why, despite living in the same mansion, there was never warm communication and mutual understanding between brother and sister. While Vincent worked to get the title, Judith took wedding lessons.
The Duchess always took upon herself all the tasks that her parents set for her. For her, it was something natural, like training as a future heir for Vincent. And precisely because their fate was predetermined by the Marquises in advance, the road before them was not tortuous. It looked more like one straight line without a single branch from the plan.
And so Judith accepted the fact of marriage to the Duke without any problems. When Vincent found out about this, he advised his father to reconsider his decision several times. But the Marquis was blinded by the Duke’s power, stubbornly instructing at the wedding. The brother was ready to help with anything if Judith came up to him and said that you didn’t want to get married.
However, the sister obeyed her father without any refusal. Vincent at the same time wondered: hadn’t Judith heard the rumors about Derrick?
Anyone who attended social gatherings could not have been unaware of the Duke’s debauchery. And wasn’t this a kind of warning for young girls?
– You liked him? – Vincent suddenly thought about it.
No matter how calm and meek his sister was, she still remained a woman – with her own feelings and emotions inside. And knowing the Duke’s fine features and appearance, it would not be surprising that Judith fell in love with his beauty. Moreover, having a title is honorable and prestigious in terms of wealth and power.
Because of this, Vincent sincerely congratulated his sister on her marriage. As the only brother, he hoped that the couple would live happily ever after. To convey his feelings, the Marquis even approached Judith after the ceremony.
“You can always tell me if you have any difficulties.”
The Duchess’s eyes widened as if she was surprised. After which she just smiled. And Vincent believed in her happiness, because her sister never looked for him. A wonderful picture formed in the man’s head in which Derrick had turned into a family man. And if he behaved inappropriately, the sister would certainly tell her brother about it.
However, every now and then witnesses and eyewitnesses appeared who noticed the Duke at midnight with other ladies. But Judith remained silent, making Vincent think that this was just another false rumor.
And suddenly Derrick, who was often involved in business and affairs, suddenly became ill to the point that he was unable to attend meetings. As if cursed, he suffered in pain and soon died, leaving his sister alone. And then Vincent attended the funeral.
The atmosphere around was strange. Everyone around pretended to grieve, but every now and then they gossiped and whispered. One phrase after another tried to sting and scratch Judith like a sharp sword. Although she had status, name and title, everyone looked at her with pity. And does this make the slightest sense?
Vincent understood perfectly well that the rumors were connected specifically with Sylvia.
