Chapter 90 – Village Children

Su Jinbei sat around in the room for a while. After she had had enough rest, she walked to the courtyard for a stroll. Yet, with her casual stroll, everyone gravitated towards her and wanted to take a peek.

Zhou Shiyun was doing his consultations with the villages. From his peripheral he saw a figure in red wandering around the courtyard. He raised his eyes to look at her, a hint of a smile flashing in his eyes.

“Dr. Zhou, is that lass over there really your lover?” The middle-aged woman being treated asked.

Zhou Shiyun paused and nodded.

“The lass is beautiful.” The middle-aged woman said with a smile, “Just that she’s wearing not quite enough.”

Zhou Shiyun, “…”

“Auntie, you might not be aware, but our Dr. Zhou’s girlfriend is a famous celebrity. She’s quite popular these days,” the young nurse assisting quipped.

“Famous celebrity?”

“Yes, yes, like the ones that appear on TV.”

The middle-aged woman seemed to suddenly realize something, “No wonder she’s so beautiful. You’re so lucky, Dr. Zhou.”

Zhou Shiyun smiled faintly, “Thank you.”

Meanwhile, Su Jinbei was bored and idling around so she started pestering a few children to play with her.

“How old are you?”

“……”

“Have you started school yet?”

The little child remained silent, standing there with a tinge of embarrassment, neither waking away nor daring to approach her.

“Come on, speak. How about this, you get one candy per sentence you speak.” Su Jinbei sat down on the rock to the side, “It’s delicious~”

She took out a box of chocolates from her bag. These chocolates and the sweets she had given to the little girl were usually kept in her bag to sustain her through work. But she wasn’t working now and they stayed in her bag without being eaten. Who knew that they would become useful here.

The little boy was still a child after all and he lived in a poverty-stricken mountainous area where supplies were scarce. His eyes glittered when he saw the beautifully packed candy. Su Jinbei took out a piece of chocolate and asked the boy, who looked to be around eight or nine years old, “How old are you?”

The little boy’s eyes followed the chocolate, “Th-thirteen.”

“Huh?” Su Jinbei was taken aback. Thirteen? He was so small, she had thought he would be around eight or nine years old. How unexpected, he’s thirteen. She frowned slightly, her heart throbbing for him.

“Here, for you.” She retracted her gaze and smiled as she handed him the chocolate.

The little boy accepted it happily. The other children were eager for their turn and replied to whatever Su Jinbei asked. Soon, all her chocolate had been given away.

The other children happily ripped the wrapping and ate it after they got their chocolate, but the first little boy kept the chocolate in his hand and didn’t move.

“You’re not eating?” Su Jinbei asked, confused.

The little boy smiled shyly, “My younger brother hasn’t tried this too, I want to take it back to have him try it.”

Su Jinbei was taken aback and suddenly regretted that she didn’t bring anything else besides the little sweets she had in her bag.

She had given back to society previously but there were people carrying out for her and she had never actually visited those poverty-stricken areas. So, coming here this time, a little boy was enough to shock her.

“Tao, let’s go home.” An old man in his sixties or seventies came over and led the little boy away. Su Jinbei sat there, staring at their leaving backs.

“Put it on.” At some point, Zhou Shiyun had walked up to her. Su Jinbei raised her head, focusing on his long black coat.

Su Jinbei stood up. Zhou Shiyun put the coat on her and explained, “It gets colder once the sun sets.”
