Chapter 178: Deceiving Uncle Sheng 77
After writing the letter, Shu Nuan asked the soldiers guarding the tent to find a messenger. Then she went back inside and fell asleep.
In the middle of the night, she awoke from a nightmare in a daze. She couldn’t fall back asleep, so she changed into a cotton-padded robe and went out. The guards inquired where she was going, as the prince had ordered them to watch over her while he was gone.
Shu Nuan pointed to the hill behind the camp, and said, “I’ll wait for the sunrise.”
“Do you want to take some people with you?”
Shu Nuan shook her head, and said, “No, no. You must be busy.”
The hill was close to the camp, so she planned to view the sunrise there and then come back.
Shu Nuan sat down on a rock atop the hill. Snowflakes still adorned the view, and the wild was cold and careless. She wrapped her cloak tighter and looked into the distance. It wasn’t yet sunrise when she heard an eagle call. A few moments later, the source of the noise had drawn closer and landed near her.
Shu Nuan jumped up from the rock and turned around. Ah’Qi was flying toward her, followed by Xuan Jiu.
“Didn’t you depart from the kingdom?”
“Princess, I have some news…” Xuan Jiu said, “Two days ago, the emperor had his empress executed.”
Shu Nuan’s mouth fell agape. “Why…” she managed to utter.
“The emperor claimed that the empress was a Nanchao spy and had lurked around for many years. He ordered that people from other nations would no longer be allowed to serve in the Imperial Court… It would be useless for you now to perform well at the academy, princess.”
After a while, Shu Nuan said, “I know.”
“Now that we are far from the capital, princess, we can leave…” Xuan Jiu stared at her and continued in a dignified voice, “These people, once they come to suspect you, will condemn you to death without caring for the person you are, or what status you have. The empress is a lesson for us.”
If she hadn’t come to Yu Shuicheng, she probably wouldn’t have had the confidence to stay and not follow Xuan Jiu. Although Sheng Qianmo had said that he believed in her, it didn’t mean that she also believed in him.
But last night, he’d asked her a question. He’d asked her if she liked him.
Did this mean that he cared about her and was different from other people, she wondered.
Shu Nuan bit her lip and looked up at Xuan Jiu.
“I haven’t done anything to harm him, or make him doubt me. He wouldn’t do this to me.”
“Princess,” Xuan Jiu said, “Must you wait until your demise to wake up to the truth!”
However, Shu Nuan was convinced that Sheng Qianmo would always treat her well. She whispered, “Don’t worry about me.”
In the end, she was a 16 year old girl who had escaped war and the destruction of her nation, only to find a flicker of warmth in the man known as Sheng Qianmo.
She convinced herself that as long as she treated him well, he’d treat her fairly.
So after hearing her decision, Xuan Jiu stared at her, as he wasn’t sure how to continue trying to persuade her. To him, it was clear that she was grasping onto an unrealistic dream.
Suddenly, the gallop of horses came from the distance, getting closer by the moment.
