Chapter 18: Don’t be afraid, it’s just a toy. (1)
After Gu Yuanyuan stabbed Lu Wenchen with her sarcastic remarks, she stopped herself while she was still having the lead.
“Director Xu, it seems that all the people have now arrived. Let’s get this started.” Lu Wenchen cast a deep look at her as he continued playing the thumb ring on his finger. Then he said, “Between these two sisters, I really wanted to find out who is better suited for the female lead role of the movie.”
Cheng Man’an took a step forward and looked at Lu Wenchen with an affectionate gaze. “Third Master, don’t worry. I will not let you down.”
Cheng Man’an tightly clenched her sleeves with her fingers. She knew that this trial play with Gu Yuanyuan was not only about her own career, but it was also about Lu Wenchen’s image.
She was the female lead who was sent in by Lu Wenchen through his money. He was the one who came to her and asked her to join the team. His first demand was to drag down Lin Shaosi in the scene they both played together.
So in accordance to his demands, Cheng Man’an deliberately performed badly at the filming just to have numerous repeated NG’s with Lin Shaosi that day. Lin Shaosi was a dedicated person, therefore, even if he felt so upset inside, he would still not show it.
(e/n: NG is a term in filming that means ‘no good’. In other words, mistakes or cuts in filming.)
Cheng Man’an knew that such a move would only make the entire crew dislike her, but this is Lu Wenchen’s request, and she affirmed to him before that she would do anything he would ask for.
Moreover, she also had her own ideas and motives. Since she’s a newcomer, she needed to act like she’s performing badly in the beginning. Because the harder she seemingly struggled in playing the role, the more she could show off her so-called ‘perseverance’. And by the time she’s going to do it seriously, all the people would be astonished at her sudden growth in acting.
A day had only passed in the set, and they were still yet to carry out everything they have planned for the movie. But in just a short amount of time, all of it suddenly changed.
How could Cheng Man’an know about Director Xu Bai’s bad temper, and how could she know how much sweat and time he spent just for this movie. Gu Yuanyuan’s sudden appearance was just in time as the director could only endure Cheng Man’an for a just a day, which was already his limit.
But this was good too, let it be this way. If this really comes to a real audition, she could use this opportunity to let everyone in the set see her true potential as an actress. And also to let everyone recognize her as the rightful female lead of the movie.
As for Gu Yuanyuan, aside from trying to rob this role from her (CM), playing little tricks here and there, and creating some fuss, what else could she possibly do? She survived from her past life, so how could Gu Yuanyuan be better than her.
Cheng Man’an had always wanted to know how GU Yuanyuan and Lu Wenchen were connected to each other. In the past two days, she had been making indirect inquiries about it, and unexpectedly, she learned something from Yang Yufei’s mouth, and that was— Gu Yuanyuan successfully escaped from Lu Wenchen’s hand.
It’s ridiculous to think that after she ran away from him, she still kept showing herself up in front of Third Master. This kind of ‘hard to get play’ of her made Cheng Man’an sneer inside and even felt ashamed at her shameful behavior.
(e/n: the original words for the slanted line are >> “欲擒故纵” that literally translates as ‘In order to capture someone, one must loosen the reins in order to grasp them better’ , it’s a Chinese idiom or a kind of figure of speech.)
Since this was the case, in this trial play, she would surely use her real strength to slap Gu Yuanyuan in the face and proved to Lu Wenchen that Gu Yuanyuan was not worth it for his attention at all.
No, he’s not interested in Gu Yuanyuan at all. He was just treating her like a little plaything, nothing more.
Cheng Man’an thought so and smiled towards Gu Yuanyuan while saying, “Xiao Jiu, I’m so glad that you got Director Xu’s favor. Now, you can also try out the role of Xiao Qi. Oh, what a rare opportunity this is.”
(e/n: “小七” means Xiao Qi or Little Seven)
“I’m also fond of the role of Xiao Qi. However, in terms of work, public and personal interests didn’t matter. What matters is, whoever is the most suitable actress between the two of us will naturally play the role of Xiao Qi. Therefore, I’m going to go all out.”
